Starfield COEX: Come for the Shelves, Stay If It Rains

Starfield COEX Mall is a huge underground shopping mall beneath the COEX convention center in Gangnam, at 513 Yeongdong-daero. Most visitors come for one space in the middle of it: the Starfield Library. Those are the giant bookshelves that have probably already turned up on your feed.

Is it worth your limited time? The library is. You don’t need a ticket for it. The mall is open 10:30 AM to 10:00 PM every day, and it connects underground to Samseong Station (Line 2) and Bongeunsa Station (Line 9). You can drop in at almost any hour, in any weather.

The rest is a large, clean mall with an aquarium, a cinema, a casino, plenty of restaurants and more shops than one visit can cover. How much more of your day it deserves depends on two things: the weather, and whether you have kids with you.

🎯 Who should make the trip

  • Staying in or passing through Gangnam: go. It’s a short detour off Line 2 or Line 9.
  • Stuck with rain, freezing wind or a bad air day: go, and plan to stay a while.
  • Traveling with kids: go. The aquarium keeps them busy, and the library gives everyone somewhere to sit.
  • Into books or photography: go. The shelves alone are worth the ride.
  • Based north of the river on a dry, sunny day, with nothing else planned in Gangnam: this one can wait. The library is a short stop at the end of a cross-town ride.

You’ll see it called COEX Mall, Starfield COEX Mall or just COEX, and they’re all the same place. COEX (short for Convention and Exhibition) is the convention center on top. Starfield is the brand the mall runs under.

Those are the mall’s hours. The aquarium, the cinema and individual restaurants set their own, so check them separately if your plan depends on one of them.

In the reviews, the library comes up first, over and over. People like the mall itself because it’s clean and big enough to fill a day. The one complaint worth knowing about is what the food costs.

📚 The Starfield Library: what you’re walking into

The library sits in the middle of the mall, so you’ll often walk into it before you start looking. In Korean it’s Byeolmadang Doseogwan (별마당 도서관). Byeolmadang means roughly “star yard”, a Korean version of the Starfield name. Save the Korean on your phone to show staff and to search in map apps.

The first thing you notice is the height. The shelves rise far over your head and are filled with books all the way up. The open floor below has tables and seats.

It opened in 2017 and people really do use it as a reading room. Kids do homework at the tables and adults read or work on laptops, while the photographers move around them. For a space in the middle of a mall, it’s calm.

Can you actually read the books?

Yes. Take any book you can reach off the shelf and sit down with it. Most are in Korean, and a lot of them are by Korean authors. If you don’t read Korean, it’s still a good-looking place to rest your feet.

Everything above arm’s height is there for your camera.

Getting the photo

  • Stand at one end of the shelves and shoot along their length with your phone upright. That’s how the height comes through.
  • If your phone has an ultra-wide (0.5x) lens, use it here.
  • Walk the whole floor once before you pick a spot. The view changes a lot as you move.
  • For a shot with you in it, have your friend crouch and aim slightly upward. The shelves look even taller from knee height.
  • Keep the people at the tables out of your shot. They came to study.

🚇 Getting to Starfield COEX Mall without going outside

Two subway lines run straight into the mall. Samseong Station on Line 2 (the green line) and Bongeunsa Station on Line 9 both have underground passages to it. You can arrive, see the library, eat and leave without going up to street level once. A T-money card works on both lines.

From Line 2: Samseong

Samseong is three stops east of Gangnam Station. Line 2 is the circle line that also runs through Hongdae, City Hall and Jamsil, so from any of those you can ride here without changing trains. Inside the station, follow the signs for COEX Mall.

From Line 9: Bongeunsa

Line 9 runs across the south of the city, from Gimpo Airport through Yeouido and the Express Bus Terminal to Bongeunsa. From Incheon Airport, take the AREX airport train to Gimpo Airport and change to Line 9 there. Bongeunsa Station has its own underground link into the mall.

By taxi

Just say COEX. It’s pronounced ko-ek-seu here, and drivers know it. They’ll drop you at street level, so look for a way down into the mall and follow the signs inward.

Finding the library once you’re in

The mall is big and underground, with few landmarks, so your sense of direction goes quickly. Your map app’s location also gets unreliable underground. Use the directory boards, and if you get turned around, show a staff member the library’s Korean name.

Before you set off, search that name in Naver Map or Kakao Map. The pin lands on the library itself. That beats a pin on a building the size of a neighborhood.

🕙 When to go

There’s no weekly closing day to plan around. It’s open 10:30 AM to 10:00 PM, seven days a week, so choose your time based on what you want from the visit.

Early, for the photo

If you want the library as empty as possible, arrive close to the 10:30 opening. On weekends, families and shoppers add to the photo crowd as the day goes on.

Any time, when the weather turns

It’s underground, linked to two subway lines and open until ten, which makes COEX about as easy a bad-weather backup as Seoul has. Summer downpours, January wind, a bad fine-dust day: you can wait any of them out down here without a coat. Some visitors make a whole day of it.

Late, after sights that close early

Because it stays open until 10 PM, COEX works well as the second half of a day. See Gyeongbokgung Palace in daylight, since it closes hours before the mall does. Then cross town on the subway (one change of line) for the library and dinner.

🐠 What else is down there

The library takes care of the photo. The rest of the mall is worth your time on a wet day, or when you’re traveling with children.

COEX Aquarium

The aquarium is inside the mall, and it’s the big draw for families. It sells its own tickets and sets its own hours, so check both before you plan an afternoon around it. With small kids, go there first while they still have energy. Save the library for a quiet break afterward.

The cinema

The mall has a large Megabox multiplex. Hollywood films in Korea usually play with the original English soundtrack and Korean subtitles, so a movie is a realistic plan for a rainy evening. Check animated films before you buy, because many also show in a Korean-dubbed version.

The casino

The complex also has a casino. Casinos in Seoul only let in foreign visitors and check ID at the door, so bring your passport if you plan to go in.

Screens, art and a lot of shops

The main corridors have big digital screens and art installations, and the shops go on for a long way. It’s easy to run out of time before you run out of mall. If you only have an hour, pick one direction from the library and stick to it.

🍜 Eating without overpaying

Finding food is easy. There’s no shortage of sit-down restaurants serving full meals. The problem is the bill. These are Gangnam mall prices, and visitors notice.

The 7,500-won lunch

If the menu prices put you off, one reviewer says they ate at an employee-style cafeteria here for 7,500 won. The review doesn’t say exactly where it is, so ask at an information desk for the staff cafeteria (구내식당, gunae sikdang). Cafeterias like this serve at set meal times, so go at a normal lunch hour. The price may have changed, so treat it as a rough guide.

If food is the point of your day

Then eat somewhere else and come here for the library. The mall food is fine, just expensive. For an evening that’s all about eating, Gwangjang Market keeps its food stalls open late.

⏱️ How much time to give it

Your situationWhat to do
A gap between other plansStation, library, a few photos, a sit-down, back to the station
A rainy afternoonLibrary, lunch, the aquarium, then a film or the shops
Kids in towAquarium first, then lunch, then the library to wind down
An evening after a palace dayLibrary, dinner, then shops until closing at 10 PM
A whole free dayPossible, and some people do it

The library on its own is a quick stop. How long you stay after that depends on the weather and your feet.

⚠️ Things that catch people out

  • The size. It’s easy to get lost underground. Agree on a meeting point before your group splits up.
  • Trade shows. COEX is a working convention center, and a large exhibition can fill the corridors on an ordinary weekday.
  • The bill. Restaurant prices add up over a long day. The cafeteria lunch above helps.
  • Major holidays. The listing shows the same hours every day. Around Seollal (Lunar New Year) and Chuseok (the autumn harvest holiday), check the hours again before you set out.

If your group gets separated, meet at the library. It’s the one spot in the mall everyone can find.

🧭 Fitting it into a Seoul day

Bongeunsa is the Buddhist temple the Line 9 station is named after, and it’s just across the road from COEX. After a few hours under artificial light, a temple courtyard is a good change of pace, and the two together make a good Gangnam half-day.

If rain wipes out a whole day, pair this with the War Memorial of Korea, another long visit that’s mostly indoors. Do the museum in the morning while you’re fresh. Then come here for the library, dinner and maybe a film.
